Mountain View Dual Meet Wrap Up

On Sunday July 27 we hosted the Mountain View Masters in a friendly dual
meet at Burgess Pool.  Mountain View brought 25 enthusiastic swimmers to
mix with the 45 Menlo swimmers to combine to make a fun-filled, fast-paced
swim meet.  Times of the swims were recorded, but team scores were not.
Menlo created 8 new team records proving that our team continues to improve
over the years.

Swimmers of the Year for 2007, Sue McGlennon and John Goldman hosted a
brunch at the completion of the event which topped off a pleasant morning
of swimming.

Team Records

Menlo Masters has been recording team records for the past 14 years. Thanks
solely to Judy Strauss.   It is continues to become more challenging to set
a team record, specially for those swimmers following an all-american or
record holders into an age group. So these new team records should not go
unnoticed.

65 new team records have been set in short course and long course meets so
far this year.

2008 Team Record Setters:
Joe Davis
Jeff Strnad
Bill Dawson
Charles Ammann
Lindsay Holland
Barbara Jones
Sandy Dutro
Vivian Johsens
Jane Walker
Letty French
John Turk
Robert Barnick
Brett Bannan
Jana Matena
Ann Kay
Sadler Nelson

Have a look at our team records.  Look carefully, there are still some open
events where no one has swum the distance and any swim will plant your name
in the record books.

For instance, the empty record boxes in the men's short course yards are:
1. 8 different swims in the 19-24 year old age group
2. 55-59 200 Butterfly
3. 60-64 200 Backstroke

The empty record boxes in the women's short course yards are:
1. 19-24 1000 Free, 50 Back, 100 Back
2. 50-54 400 IM
3. 55-59 400 IM
4. 60-64 100 Breast, 200 Breast, 100 Fly, 200 Fly

Core Class

Saturday September 13, 9am.  On the grass next to the pool.
Katie Stimson is a long time member of the Menlo Masters and is also a
Physical Therapist at Kaiser Redwood City.  She would like to share some of
her knowledge about the body and how to care for it while we all pursue our
passion of swimming.
Katie says:
I would like to teach a one time class to any swim or triathlon members
who are interested in learning:
1) One efficient lower "core" exercise - gets the deep abdominal
stabilizers (transversus abdominus), deep lumbar stabilizers (multifidi) as
well as lateral hip stabilizers (glute med).
2) One upper "core" (scapular stabilization) exercise - lower traps, middle
traps.  This one is excellent for proper butterfly technique to prevent
impingement of cuff tendons.
3) Trunk mobility exercise for after long rides/swims (to loosen muscles,
lubricate joints after prolonged static positions; great for after computer
use too!).

The 1st and 3rd are multiplanar exercises which are good for triathletes
who mostly work their muscles in only one (the sagittal) plane of motion.

I have personally benefitted greatly from these exercises the most (I have
lumbar instability with FORMER radiculopathy and HAD shoulder impingement
issues) and would like to share what I have learned.  Probably 30 minutes
to an hour would be good.
This is a free clinic.  Katie would like to share her knowledge and
findings in the effort to help a few people on the team.
Just show up on Saturday September 13, 9 am on the grass next to the pool
if you are interested.
