Swimmer with a Cause

Edie Heideman, 6 year lane 5 Menlo Masters swimmer and Team Sheeper  triathlete, will once again be presenting her lecture at Menlo College on  Atherton Avenue on Wednesday, November 15th, 2006, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in  Brawner Hall 407, The Pit.

Edie tells the story of her son Adrian's triumphant life and searches for the reasons behind his tragic death. She explores how hazing, binge drinking and alcohol abuse are merely winked at in our society and illustrates how this cultural and collegiate epidemic needs to be fully addressed. She brings an urgent awareness to the problems and offers ways that collective thinking can be influenced, as well as suggesting alternative social activites that don't involve alcohol.

Hers is a timeless tale of a Mother's love for her son and how she confronted the horror and permanence of his death by finding ways of helping others confront their own losses. By sharing her experience, Edie hopes that other parents will not have to face this nightmare. It depicts her transformation from grief-stricken Mom to nationally recognized activist and lecturer. Edie's talk will resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost someone close to them.

Edie Heideman, mother of four, holds degrees from Pomona College and Stanford University. She is a public speaker and educator, a piano teacher, and a world-ranked age group triathlete.
