Hour Swim Sign Ups

Last weekend kicked off our January Hour Swim postal challenge and we will continue the surge this weekend.  The hour swim has become an annual event for us to use our killer quad  fitness and to demonstrate the strength of our swimmers compared to the other swimmers around the country.  One out of every three swimmers on our team completes the challenge and our team is a perennial contender for the top five spots in the country.  Be a part of the push.  There are still some lanes open this weekend, especially on Sunday.  It is also easier to complete the registration process this year since it is done on-line at:

Speed Club

Our 2010 Speed Club has been finalized, with expert input from swim member Dave Gildea.

Standards have been established to provide every member of our team a sufficient and fair top speed challenge to reach for this year.

The standards have been set to have relevance in our swim world.

The table below is based off of the silver level which is the national qualifying time (NQT).   An NQT is used as a standard for masters to enter a national meet, in each age group, we are just using the 100 freestyle.  The bronze time is 10% slower than the NQT and the gold level is 10% faster than the NQT.

Your speed club times must be completed at a sanctioned USMS meet and the times will be collected from the published results on the Pacific Masters web page.

We will begin a Speed Club roster on our website and list all of our gold, silver and bronze medalists along with their age and 100 free time.

Good luck and get after it.

10.00% conversion for gold and bronze
Silver is 2010 USMS National Qualifying Time.  This time is 3 year average for USMS Top Ten 10th place + 15%
Gold is 10% faster than silver.  This is USMS Top Ten 10th place average for last 3 years.
Bronze is 10% slower than silver.

Year Rounder

Another new program for Menlo Masters this year is called the Year Rounder.

To become a member of the Year Rounder Club you must swim 10,000 yards in one day at least once every month for the entire year, January to December.

Once you have completed your 10,000 yard day please notify me via email so I will be able to keep record of your accomplishments and keep the monthly results posted to the team.

The 10,000 yards can be swum in any pool, at anytime of the day, with as many breaks as necessary.

100 swimmers have completed their January requirement by swimming in one of the 100x100's workouts.

February Can Do

It is that time of the year again, the time for the annual February Can-Do Challenge.  Attempt to swim as a many yards as is personally possible and healthy in the month of February.  For every 2000 yards you swim we invite you to bring in a can of food which the team matches and then donates to the Menlo Park Senior Center Brown Bag program.  The Brown Bag program sends food home once per week with the senior population who can use a bit of nutritional supplementation in their diet.

The tracking boards with each swimmers name will be on the bulletin boards in the lobby beginning this Monday morning so you will be able to track your progress through the month.

As a small incentive to bring in more cans, the team offers a small prize if you reach 50,000 yards in the month.  A bigger prize for the swimmers who reach 100,000 yards and the biggest prize for the swimmers who log 100 miles(176,000 yards) in the month.

Building Futures Now January Update

I will include a monthly update of how our Menlo Masters are interacting with the 28 young children in our team's educational foundation project.  Most all of the mentors and tutors in this program are your lane mates and are working to make a big difference in our community.

January is off to a great start for Building Futures Now (BFN), our   partner organization in East Palo Alto.  The 4th and 5th graders have  returned to school and the 5th graders recently sent out more than 15  applications to local private middle schools!  They also just started  a new partnership with the Stanford women's crew team to provide an  opportunity for crew members to be tutors with the BFN kids, thanks to  our Menlo Masters swimmer, Kelly Fero.  Finally, eight 4th graders are  starting another session of free swimming lessons at Burgess Pool.    Friday evening working on their freestyle is the highlight of these kids' week thanks to Menlo Swim and Sport!

January also started with a fun mentor outing, and another couple  exciting events planned for the next month!  On January 9th a group of   mentors and mentees went to see Avatar: Steve LeSieur and his mentee, Melvin; Mike Fero and his mentee, Kingston; and Ann and Gordy Burton and their mentee, Diego were all able to make with a nine other kids.   There is another high-energy field trip planned by Miki Armstrong to Sky High Sports on Saturday, January 30th at 1:00PM.  The February  field trip, planned by Kim Freitas, will also be a great adventure and orienteering in Bayfront Park on Saturday, February 27th at 9:00AM.    Email Alison Lopez, Executive Director, if you're interested in  chaperoning either trip, alopez@buildingfuturesnow.org

Locker Room Remodel

There is a plan in place to improve our locker room conditions.

The main concept of the remodel is to increase the space to sit down and put on a pair of pants and shoes.

Please stay tuned for the details and just be aware that we are listening to you.
