Swim Meet Update #2
June 6, 2008
by Tim Sheeper
In this edition:

Menlo Masters/Dick Bennett Memorial Meet

We are 8 days away from our swim meet which is slated for next Saturday June 14, at Sacred Heart pool.

The reality is.the meet is in jeopardy at the present moment.  Lack of registration has driven the management team to consider canceling the meet to save the team from major losses.

We want to hold the meet to honor our swim team, our volunteer team, our meet sponsors, pacific masters swimming, United States masters swimming and Dick Bennett. So, we need to move into action mode in these final days.  We will not fail in this concerted team endeavor.

Your action item is to register for the meet at:
Menlo.mastersswim.com
Or
Complete the entry form at the front desk of the pool.

Here are some solutions to common swim meet excuses:
1. Limited time.
Enter the first event(s) and get it done early.

2. Can't dive.
You can start from in the water or take the dive clinic tonight. (Friday 6/6 at 5:30-7:00 pm with Marianne Brems)

3. I have fear of competition.
Get over it.  Everyone gets anxious before competing.  The personal rewards come from enduring the anxiety and conquering the doubts, not from the specific result.  Do you think people really care about YOUR time?

4. I have never swum in a meet.
You do not even know what you have been missing.  The exhilaration of finishing a race is cleansing and it will be your personal best time.

5. I can't do anything but freestyle.
Perfect we have a bunch of freestyle only events.

6. I can't swim because I am volunteering.
We will find replacements for your position while you go out and strut your stuff.  Nobody's role at the meet is that important that you can't take a couple of minute break.

7. I am going to wait till race day to sign up.
You may not have that luxury, we need your commitment sooner than that.

8. I do not know how to do flip turns.
Welcome to the club.  You do not need to know how to do a flip turn to swim up and down the pool at top speed.

9. I am a triathlete and we don't do swim meets.
Why?  Are they too challenging?

10. Not worth the entry fee.
We can work out a payment plan or establish a barter.

Here are the vitals:
1. We currently have 98 swimmers registered for the meet.
2. In 2006 we had 350 registered for the meet.
3. We currently have 41 Menlo swimmers registered for the meet.
4. In 2006 we had over 100 Menlo swimmers.
5. We currently have almost 300 swimmers on Menlo Masters.
6. In 2006 we had 20% fewer swimmers than we do now.
7. We currently average 120 Menlo Masters swimmers in our weekday workouts.
8. We need to hit less than our daily average to achieve our 100 swimmer meet goal next Saturday.

These are currently our honorable 41 swimmers who have chosen to represent the team.  Can we add your name to the list?
