Killer Quad - 2006 Results

Congratulation to the 59 swimmers who have completed all four parts of the 2006 Killer Quad.  59 athlete completions is one of our highest finisher totals in the past 16 years.

The Killer Quad was created many years ago in the effort to keep swimmers motivated and focused to get in the water during the winter months.  It has evolved to become a team tradition and a team bonding activity.  The extreme distance, when attacked with the help and assistance of lane mates becomes very manageable.  Hundreds of swimmers over the years have logged their lifetime longest swims during these holiday endurance fests.

In years past fewer swimmers on Menlo Masters would complete all the swims.  In fact, it used to be a team tradition that the swimmers who achieved the four had to give an acceptance speech at the awards banquet. (This year's banquet, Sunday January 28, 1pm)  The tradition has since been retired due the vast numbers.  This year's awards will be distributed by lane level.  For example, all the level 3 swimmers will come to the front and receive their award.

Congratulations to all who completed and to all the attempted part of the Killer Quad.  The following 59 swimmers are the 2006 Killer Quaders.

Swim Parkas Available

These parkas help make the transition from the locker room to the pool and then again from the pool to the locker room more manageable during these frosty months.

Custom team parkas can be ordered every year, and the deadline for this year is January 22, 2007.

The difference this year is that there are two choices.

Choice One:
TruWest - Our traditional team parka is made by TruWest.  These are the parkas that we have been ordering for over a decade and are made to last for two decades.  The parka is royal blue with a white stripe through the middle and big "MENLO" lettering on the back with team logo and name on the front.  These parkas are $200 and take 6-8 weeks to be made and delivered.  To order one of these parkas, just send me an email, stating your size, the name you would like embroidered on the front, and then bring in a check or cash for $200 or we can charge your account.  Deadline for orders are January 22, 2007.  For sizing considerations visit, www.truwest.com.

Choice Two:
TYR - This is the new option in team parka.  I have enjoyed my new TYR parka since the beginning of fall.  These are wonderful parkas that we have immediately available in our pro shop.  They offer a slimmer, not so bulky cut, are completely fleece lined and are only $100+tax.  Upon request, we will embroider the team logo on the front at no extra charge.  If paying by cash or check I can deliver these parkas before the 11am opening of the pro shop.  This goes for any cash purchase at the pro shop.  Credit card transactions need to be done between the pro shop business hours of 11am-7:30pm.

Marc Evans Group Freestyle Clinics

New for Menlo Masters in 2007 is a monthly group freestyle clinic coached by Marc Evans.

Among other things, Marc has coached for over 20 years, written two books on triathlons and developed a hand paddle for SPEEDO.

These clinics are designed to help all levels of swimmers from beginner to advanced.  The three, hour long sessions are extremely comprehensive and structured so that every participant is viewed and coached with their individual strengths and limitations taken into account.

Marc will complete a mobility assessment on each participant so that a personal freestyle stroke can be developed based on those results.  Verbal, video and hands-on feedback will be used during sessions.  There is a minimum of 10 and maximum of 15 swimmers per 3-week session.

Vitals:
Where-Burgess Pool, Instructional Pool-85 degrees
When-First three Tuesdays of every month, throughout 2007. (Last three Tuesdays in January)

Judy Strauss - Sunday morning masters coach - Open letter to the team

Dear friends that happen to be teammates,

As most of you know last spring I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery in May. Earlier this week I had my 6th month appointment and I'm doing very well.

While the cancer experience has been unpleasant I have to say there have been many wonderful things that have gone along with it.

A major part of the good stuff comes from the love and support that I have gotten from you. I have grown, not just because of facing cancer but because I have been around really wonderful people that have helped me physically, emotionally and spiritually. I have watched how others on the team have faced cancer with grace and they have been role models for me. I received many emails, cards, phone calls, dinners, visits, flowers, books and one banner; all of it gave me strength. Several of you supported me when I participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and some of you even joined me on the relay. When I came back to the pool I was encouraged throughout my recovery.

So dear friends, I love you and I thank you. I hope that I can be as good a friend as each of you have been to me.

Much love and lots of swimming....

Judy
