2007 Menlo Masters Seasonal Plan

2007 will mark the 13th season for Menlo Masters.  We have grown from a small, fun, close-knit group of swimmers to a large, fun close-knit group of swimmers.

Our mission is to continue to enhance people's lives through the positive connection to the Menlo Master swimming community.

I am sure that our new home here at Burgess Pool will open the doors for many budding masters swimmers and offer many hours of high level masters swimming for the experienced.

We will keep it simple, familiar, but rich in 2007.

We will have swim workouts 7 days a week.
We will offer up to 4 workouts per day on weekdays.
We will offer 4 workouts on the weekends.
We will prepare for 4 swim meets.
We will target 2 open water swims.
We will hold 7 homegrown events.
We will offer small group technique coaching 3 times per month.
We will have 2 parties/celebrations.
We will continue to improve and refine our offerings including our workouts, and clinics.

The swim meets we will focus on:
1. Rinconada Spring Meet-March 17
2. Short Course Championships-Walnut Creek-April 20-22
3. Short Course Nationals-Washington State-May 17-20**
4. Long Course Championships-Santa Cruz-July 13-15

The open water swims we will focus on:
1. Lake Berryessa 1 and 2 mile-June 2
2. Donner Lake 2.7 mile-Aug 11

The intramural/homebrewed team events we will hold are:
1. Hour swim weekend -Jan 27-28
2. February Can-Do-All Month
3. February Carbo-Load Breakfast-Feb 10
4. Blue/Gold Intramural Swim Meet-March 3
5. Duathlon Swim/Run-April 7
6. Dynamic Duo-September 29
7. Killer Quad-Hour Swim, 50x100, 75x100, 100x100's-Oct-Dec.

The small group technique and performance coaching:
1. Services will be provided by Marc Evans, who is a new coaching partner.
2. Sessions are for the first 3 Tuesdays of each month.  Noon-1pm
3. 10-15 swimmers.  Month-long commitment for optimal improvement.

The parties/celebrations will be:
1. Swimmer of the Year/Killer Quad Award Afternoon-Jan 28
2. Summer BBQ hosted by swimmers of the year-July 29

I would like to see more Menlo Masters use the Burgess Pool facility outside of the regularly scheduled team training sessions, and truly view it as YOUR home pool.  I believe that the joy of swimming is enhanced if a portion of your swimming is done outside of the structured team environment.

In an effort to promote this belief, I am offering an annual Masters swim fee that includes year round unlimited lap swimming for about an extra $10 per month.  This will allow masters to come swim before workout, stay in after workout, stop by for a quick dip before going home from work, or sleep in on a weekend morning and get your swim done in the afternoon warmth.

The addition of Marc Evans as an experienced swim coach and freestyle stroke technician is going to be great for our swimmers.  Marc starts with each athlete by assessing joint mobility, muscle flexibility and strength and then aids the swimmer in building the best stroke possible for the individual using verbal and visual feedback.  This tailored stroke training over a long period of time will offer better results than single point-in-time clinics.  This is a phenomenal way to make freestyle gains.  Stay tuned for registration methods.  Clinics start in January.

I am looking forward to 2007 with much enthusiasm and optimism.  2006 was a year where a great deal of time and energy was invested into creating a stronger foundation for Menlo Masters.  I believe through the hard work and commitment of many team members we finally achieved that goal. Our team can now continue to successfully mature, and excel in offering great services to the entire community.

An email message will be distributed later this week with details for 2007 registration details.

See ya on the deck,

Tim Sheeper
