* Coming Events

A short update to preview coming Menlo Masters team events ... look forward to seeing you at many of these!

1. June 26 (next Sunday) - College of San Mateo long course meet San Mateo Masters is hosting a new long course meet at the College of San Mateo. The pool's just been redone, and the meet will be short, nearby and a lot of fun! First-time meet swimmers, this is a great opportunity to try out competition in a low-key, friendly environment. For those of you aiming to swim the cycle, you can notch up another four events. And for those of you up to the challenge - and many of you are capable of meeting the challenge - you can swim 100 Free to try for bronze, silver or gold Speed Club honors. Don't forget that the beauty of long course (50m versus the usual 25y we have at Burgess) is that you only do HALF the lengths - much easier to count!

Online registration closes next Wed, June 22. You can also sign up the day of the meet, but you'll need to be there early. The meet sheet with all the details, including registration can be found at: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=1725&smid=3056

LCM Speed Club standards are posted on Google docs: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B9UOxuTLNrE0NDg1YmVlYTQtNTY5Yy00NDE4LWI0NmEtYzZhOGE4MGQzYTRj&hl=en_US&authkey=CIDq-e0G

2. July 8-10 - Pacific Masters LCM Championships, Santa Cruz As always, Menlo Masters participates in the second of three local championship meets. Santa Cruz is a great place to get away with the family for a few days and swim a race or two (or seven!). You must register in advance for this meet. Six team members are already signed up. Mail entries must be postmarked by next Wed, June 22, or you may enter online up until midnight July 1: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/meet_information.cfm?c=1510&smid=3032

3. August 21 - Splash & Dash Weekend Series, Open Water Swim (Morgan Hill) Those of you looking for a challenge in and out of the water without going for a full-on tri, try out the August Splash & Dash. It's an open water swim held monthly - though only the August event is a designated Menlo Masters team event. You can do a one or a two mile open water swim, and if you'd like, pair it with a run following the swim. For details: http://www.thresholdracinginc.com/splash-dash-weekends.php

4. August 28 - Summer Picnic (Bair Island Aquatic Center, Redwood City) Join swimmers of the year Barbara Jones and Carl Mortensen for our team picnic this year - and try out a variety of rowing activities! The event will be held in Redwood City at Bair Island. More details and sign-ups coming soon - in the meantime, you can browse the Bair Island Aquatic Center's site at: http://www.gobair.org/index.html

And those of you looking all the way into September for a big challenge, put the Mountain View SCM meet on your calendar for the 25th. We'll be challenging ourselves, each other and Mountain View Masters to swim the "Animal" - swim the 400 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 200 Fly and 400 IM all in one meet!

* Building Futures Now

Building Futures Now is in the full swing of its summer program! As always, Menlo Masters swimmers have been a big part of the success of this unique program that changes the lives of the children who participate. Even if you cannot mentor a child for a year, you can make a difference by volunteering for our field trips. Here are this summer's field trips - we welcome chaperones for any of them.

July 1: Pescadero Creek Beach
July 8: Sanborn Park with Youth Science Institute
July 15: Potrero Nuevo Organic Farm
July 22: Mountain View Community Art and Music Center
July 29: Burgess Park Pool Party for Kids and Familes

The Potrero Nuevo trip is particularly exciting. Want to take a day off and visit a coastside organic farm? We're looking for chaperones and drivers for this trip, from 9:00am-4:00pm, Friday, July 15. Potrero Nuevo is a CSA (Community Sustainable Agriculture) farm that supplies produce to low income families along the San Mateo coast. It's a beautiful place run by great people near Half Moon Bay on Tunitas Creek Road. Please consider spending the day with kids touring the farm and doing a short hike -- you could also take off and do a run or bike ride. Potrero Nuevo is also home of the famous bike hut on Tunitas http://potreronuevofarm.org/thebikehut.html. Email Kim Freitis. Descriptions of each of the field trips: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B9UOxuTLNrE0ZTY4MGM4ZDItNDljMS00YzRmLTk4NzMtZGUyMDVhMTVkNTcw&hl=en_US&authkey=CLCPyP8D
