Rinconada Spring Meet

When:  Saturday March 14, 2009

Where:  Rinconada Pool, Palo Alto

Why:  First real swim meet of the season.  Base line times and watching the 1650 Butterfly spectacle at the end of the meet.

Registration: http://www.pacificmasters.org/comp/09rincscy.pdf

You are also welcome to enter the meet when you arrive on the day, but you must be there at least 45 minutes before the start of your event, which is always a guess.

Who goes:  We traditionally have 15-25 people swim in this meet.  It is close and local and invaluable for those swimmers planning on going to Championships and Nationals this year.

Pacific Masters Short Course Championships

When:  Friday-Sunday April 17-19, 2009

Where:  Pleasanton.  A wonderful 50 meter pool that has a men's course and a women's course along with a big pool for warm up and warm down.

Why:  This is the biggest meet of the year short of Nationals.  You will experience the depth and breadth of swimmers in our Northern California and Nevada region.  A must for swimmers preparing for USMS National in April

Goal:  Field 12+ relay times over the course of the 3 day meet.

History:  Menlo Masters has attended this meet 13 of the past 15 years.  We have placed as high as second and this year I am looking to have a minimum of 50 participants from our team spread out over the 3 day event.  We are big, strong and fast. I would like to go to Pleasanton and flex our muscles a bit.

Registration:  Get it done at:   http://wcm.mastersswim.com

USMS Short Course Nationals

The 2009 Short Course Nationals are going to be held in Clovis, California, which is a short distance from Fresno.

Clovis has a long tradition of being a very strong swimming community and is excited to host the fastest masters swimmers in the nation this coming May.  The meet is held over 4 days from May 7-10.  Menlo Masters will be there.

The meet is open to all masters swimmers regardless of ability level or age.  Each swimmer is allotted 3 swims without qualifying times.  To swim more events qualifying times must be achieved.

Registration: By April 9 at: http://www.usms.org/comp/scnats09/

Swimmers of the Year

John Sulzbach is our Male Swimmer of the Year.
John has been a part of Menlo Masters in some form or another since 1991.  He is an avid workout swimmer and swim meet competitor, usually scoring many USMS top ten times in the sprints and IM events.  John is a perennial favorite in all of our intramural endeavors, and to top it off John pulls off the pool covers every single morning year round.

Sandy Dutro is our Female Swimmer of the Year.
Sandy is a veteran member of Menlo Masters and is usually one of our top three point scorers at swim meet and a perennial age group winner at open water events.  Sandy is a swimming addict who frequents the morning 7 am workouts and all of our in-team competitions.  She is a positive force to those in the level 3 and 4 lanes where she hangs out for about 5 hours of each week.

Wanted-Team Statistician

After almost two decades, Judy Strauss, has finally decided to allow someone else on the team to take on the venerable position of team statistician.  Judy has been a fantastic asset to the team and I would like to thank her for all her time, efforts and ground breaking work  in compiling our team records, open water points, meet results, swim the cycle records, and any other avenue that dealt with numbers and rankings.  If there is anyone out there who would be interested in taking on the role, Judy is ready to train and get you up to speed very quickly.  Please let me know

Coaches Thank You

Judy, Rick and I would like to thank the team for the generosity displayed towards our coaches gifts this year.  Like always, the power of the team exceeds our expectations in every possible way.

I do not know about the other coaches, but I am going to use my windfall to "steal-away" from the team for a few days real soon.  It's not that I am not enjoying the cold and rainy mornings with everybody, I just want to see what else is going on out there in the big world.  Thanks.
