Mountain View Masters Swim Meet and Brunch

It does not get any more convenient than this. We will be hosting the very lively Mountain View swimmers at our pool for a friendly gathering of swimmers, otherwise known as a swim meet.  It will be what you make of it.  It can be a high level event for you where you work on getting your best time or you can approach it with a relaxed attitude where you are satisfied with the outcome regardless.

There will be a wonderful Sunday Brunch hosted by the Mountain View Masters at the completion of the meet.  Including hot and cold food, nutritious and otherwise.

Please RSVP on the evite (currently we have 36 rsvps) that was sent to you, so we can better estimate the food needs.  We also request that you bring a family member or friend to enjoy in the brunch and the meet.  We will keep them occupied with timing duties.

Building Futures Now (BFN)

We need help.

Building Futures Now is a foundation that Menlo Masters began 2 years ago to help kids who really need it.   Basically, we adopt 15 new 4th graders every year and commit to their education and social development for the next 12 years.

When I say adopt,  I mean we put a great deal of time and energy into developing their academics and assist them in navigating society.

The way Menlo Masters help is through after-school tutors for the education piece and mentors for the social piece.  These two components have proven extremely successful in child development.

Last year was our first year of full operation and we had 14 wonderful students paired with 14 outstanding mentors from Menlo Masters.  These mentors are people you swim with every day.

This is where the request for help comes in.  We have adopted 15 new students this year and we still have the 14 from last year.  We need 8 more mentors for the new students this year.  And, we need some men.

The mentor commitment is for one year for 3-6 hours per month.  This is enough time for a good mentor to change a kidâ?Ts life.  And, as we have discovered from last year, change the life of the mentor as well.

Yes, it may be a hassle.  Yes, it may not fit nicely into your tight schedule.  But, if you can make it work, many individuals benefit.

Menlo Masters has committed to this endeavor for the next 12 years, so this request for help will be an annual occurrence that I know we can fulfill.

For more information on mentoring you can:
1. Contact  Tim Sheeper @ info@teamsheeper.com
2. Contact the director of BFN. Alison Lopez. (ask Tim for email address).
3. Come to a mentors orientation on Thursday, September 17, 6:00-7:30PM

Dynamic Duo

The Dynamic Duo is an annual team event where we pair two swimmers together to compete in a 2000 yard relay race pitted against 10 other equally matched teams.  The partnerâ?Ts trade off every 50 yards until 2000 yards has been achieved.  It is approximately a 25 minute high intensity, high fun event.  Awards are given upon completion of the swim and everyone wins a piece of fruit.  The higher your team places in the heat the larger the piece of fruit you win.  Watermelons down to kiwi.

Please save the date of:

Saturday October 17, 2009

We will offer 4 Heats which you will have to sign up for via an online forum. (sign-ups are not yet open)
The heats will be:

1-6:00-6:45
2-6:45-7:30
3-7:30-8:15
4-8:15-9:00

Sign up for your time slot.  You will be paired with a swimmer in your heat that will ensure that all teams have the same chance of winning

Mavens Water Polo Tournament

The Menlo Mavens are the water polo ladies that train and compete out of Burgess Pool under the coaching leadership of Lindsay Holland.

The program grows every year in numbers and strength of players.  They even offer coed scrimmages once a month on Friday nights.

The second annual Menlo Mavens water polo tournament will be held at Burgess Pool on Sunday October 11, 2009.

Come out and give it a try or just come out and offer some program support.

Fitter and Faster Tour

Wonderful to see that three Olympians have taken it upon themselves to give back to the sport swimming, because they feel swimming has given them so much.

These three Olympians are traveling around the country sharing the message of fun and involvement. The message is being sent to kids and adults alike.  There is a tour stop in town this weekend.  Check the included link for more details.
