Jane Stites

Many of the newer swimmers on Menlo Masters may not be aware that our team ranges and reaches beyond the walls of our pool.  What we have created over the years is an athletic, active and caring community of individuals who also like to swim.  We have a veteran Menlo Masters swimmer who has been blind-sided by a recent illness and is in need of our team support.  Jane Stites is an integral part of Menlo Masters and a close friend to many on our team.  Please take the time to send Jane a message on a website that was set up for her so her family and friends can communicate with her.

Dynamic Duo

The Dynamic Duo is an annual team event that dates back a dozen or more years.  The Dynamic Duo is scheduled for next Saturday October 11, 2008.  The event is simply a 2000 yard swim relay shared by two swimmers trading off every 50 yards.  The event is of course for fun and challenge and nearly each team wins an award.  The awards are fruit related, the faster the team the bigger the piece of fruit.  First place gets a watermelon and the last place team gets a grape.  Here is what you have to do if you would like to participate.

1. Send and email to Tim to reserve a spot at 6am or 7am or 8am.

2. Show up before your swim, or stay after your swim to time and count for a team in need of your services.  This is crucial because as we all know it is impossible to swim hard and count.

Again, send Tim an email and request a time slot before next Wednesday night 10/8 and I will send you back an email confirming your spot.  I will then broadcast the equal and fair team
pairings next Thursday 10/9.

Building Futures Now

Building Futures Now is the foundation set up with the collaboration of Menlo Masters.  We have adopted 14 4th graders and will mentor them all the way through college graduation and we will adopt an additional 14-15 kids every year for the next 5 years.

Some amazing things have been going on:
1. Lindsay Welton has begun a swim lesson program on Sunday mornings at Burgess for the BFN children and family members.
2. Kim Freitas has constructed a winter field trip program that is of superior class.  This needs to be seen to be believed. Also, we are still looking for chaperons for this weekend's mountain bike field trip. http://buildingfuturesnow.org/index.php?page=winter-field-trips

Along with all the amazing things there is still a need for one more mentor this year.  Please see the following and determine if that person is you.

Dear Tim,
There was an incredible turnout of Menlo Masters last night for the   mentor dinner.  I have said it before and I will say it again--the   people that I have met from Menlo Masters are an amazing and generous   group.  Watching Charlie Dimmler play tag with fourth graders  is a   beautiful thing to behold!   Thank you for your part in the   recruiting--I am so pleased with the people that showed up and   committed to the year.

So, here is my question for you--is there one other male mentor that   is available for Building Futures Now?--we have one little boy that   did not get a mentor and I would like to rectify that.  If you know of   someone who is young or young at heart and would like to mentor a boy   who has no dad and has a single mom who works ridiculously long hours   leaving him at home with grandma who puts him in front of the tv or   video games....it is only 3 hours a month but it really could change   Jacob's life around.

Best,
Laurel

Killer Quad #1-Hour Swim

The Killer Quad season is upon us.  There will be several workouts throughout October that are in preparation for the One Hour Swim on Halloween.  The hour swim is the traditional first swim of the Killer Quad Series.  The 50x100's on Thanksgiving, 75x100's on Christmas Eve and then 100x100's on News Years Eve are the other 3 swims that keep us all healthy and active through the holiday season.  Specifics on those swims are forthcoming.

This year we have schedule 4 different opportunities for the hour swim.
Thursday Oct 30-7pm
Friday Oct 31, 5:45am, 7:00am and 12 noon.

Thursdays

Due to the volume of  swimmers in the pool on Mondays.  We will move our SPLIT POOL days to Thursdays for the remainder of the year.  The volume of swimmers is typically lower on Thursday and will accommodate the split more efficiently.  Now we will be able to determine if the Mondays were our largest volume day of the week because of the splitting or for other reasons.

Thursday split pool will begin on October 9.

Alan Liu Short Course Meters Meet-Mountain View

A beautiful day dawned for the annual Alan Liu memorial meet.  This intimate meet offered many individual swims that some of our swimmers used to complete their yearly cycle.  Fortunately, relays were contested which is an oddity for a non-championship event. Thanks to all our Menlo Masters swimmers who represented our team well.

H Ward Trueblood

Again, H Ward Trueblood proves that there is immense greatness and talent within the confines of our pool.  Level 6 swimmer Ward has just written a book of poetry that chronicles his life as the son of a country physician, a surgeon in Vietnam, a clinical surgeon at Stanford, a father a husband a grandfather a gardener a cyclist and a poet.  His book explores the contradictions of those various parts of his life.  You can find more about his book by going to xlibris and searching for H Ward Trueblood or by following this link.
